Tools You’ll Need

In order to fix a mirror that has fallen off, you’ll need the following tools:

Hammer
Punch
Adjustable wrench
Tape measure
Screwdriver
Needle-nose pliers
Wire brush

First, use the hammer to remove any screws that may be holding the mirror in place. Then, using the punch and adjustable wrench, loosen the screws so they can be pulled out. Next, use the tape measure to determine where the mirror attaches to the car. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws that attach the mirror to its mounting bracket. Finally, use the needle-nose pliers to gently detach the mirror from its mountings. Remove all of the old adhesive and replace it with new tape Measure and cut a piece of wire mesh about 2 inches larger than your new mirror mountings. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from one end of each wire. Twist each wire around one of the mountings so that it forms a loop. Make sure that each wire is tight against both sides of the mounting post. Scribe a line on each side of each mounting post where you will install your new mirror mountings. Drill two 1/4 inch holes in each mounting post. Insert wires into holes, twist together tightly, and then screw in mounting plate (see photo).

Procedure

If your rear view mirror is loose, you can use this simple guide to reattach it.

1. Remove the mirror cover by gently lifting up on one side and then pulling it off.

2. Locate the retaining screws that hold the mirror to the body and remove them with a Phillips head screwdriver.

3. Align the new mirror mounting bracket with the holes in the body of your car and insert the screws into the threads. Tighten them securely with a Philips head screwdriver.

4. Reattach the cover to the mirror by aligning it with the holes in the body of your car and pushing it down until it clicks into place.

Tips for a Successful Reattachment

Reattaching a rear view mirror can be a daunting task for even the most experienced carpenter. Here are a few tips to ensure that your repair goes smoothly:

1) Remove any obstructions from the area around the mirror. If there is anything blocking the view of the mirror, it will need to be removed before proceeding.

2) Mark and drill pilot holes into the surface of the mirror using a drill bit that is slightly larger than the screw that will be used to attach it. Be sure to use a mask and goggles when drilling in order to protect your eyes and lungs from debris.

3) Use screws that are appropriately sized for the mirror’s mounting holes and tighten them up using a wrench. Be sure not to over-tighten or you may damage the mirror.

4) Once all screws are in place, apply pressure with a rubber mallet to attach the mirror to the mounting bracket. This will help secure it in place until paint or other finishes can be applied later on.

Conclusion

If your rear view mirror has been accidentally detached from the car, or if it has become loose over time and does not securely attach to the car, you will need to replace it. This guide will show you how to replace the mirror and provide instructions on how to secure it in place.
