Diameter is the equivalent of width when measuring pipe products. It is the distance from the widest part of a pipe to the point where it tapers to its smallest diameter.

How to Measure the Diameter of an Exhaust Pipe

When you’re looking to buy or install a new exhaust pipe, you need to know the diameter of the pipe. To measure the diameter of an exhaust pipe, you’ll need a tape measure, some water and soap, and a bucket.

1. Starting at one end of the pipe, wrap the tape around it once. Make sure that the measurement is taken from the inside of the pipe and not from the outside.

2. Next, wet the end of the tape with water and soap. Gently scrub around the circumference of the pipe to clean off any dirt or debris.

3. Measure your cleaned-off circumference measurement and add 1 inch to get your total diameter in inches. For example, if your circumference measurement is 10 inches and you want a 12-inch diameter exhaust pipe, add 1 inch (10+1=11) to get your total diameter as 12 inches.

Tips for Measuring the Diameter of an Exhaust Pipe

Measure the outside diameter of the exhaust pipe. The Internal Diameter (ID) of the exhaust pipe is the smaller of the two diameters.
